Research, research

Is anyone out there reading this British, or know someone who would know... what do the English call the American Revolution? What's taught in English schools about that part of our shared history? (Precious little is taught here anymore, I gather.) I have two English characters who are in their late thirties, early fifties, respectively, and I need to know how they'd refer to it.

If anyone knows. :)

(I need a Google-type search engine where you can ask specific questions...)

That was a toughie...
...but as far as I can tell, they call it the "American Revolution," the same as we do. The clincher was an article done by the BBC. Here are some references for your interest.

Here they call it the "War of American Independence": Timeline of Britain's Age of Empire

Here it's the "American Revolution": Britain Express: George III

I couldn't find the UK counterpart for Google, if there is one, but I did find one for Yahoo!: Yahoo! UK and Ireland

Some of the UK sites manage to discuss the Revolution without naming it at all: Great Britain in North America

From the BBC, "American Revolution": Was the American Revolution Inevitable?

No info on the American Revolution, but might be useful anyway: United Kingdom English for the American Novice

Groovy! Muchas gracias! :)

None of my "British-to-American" sites mentioned it at all. :)

Ask Jeeves at ask.com is pretty good. Sometimes you have to restate things or check out their suggested searches to get where you want to go, but I usually find out what I need to know in the end.

I thought about Ask Jeeves, but I wasn't sure of the URL and I felt weird asking Google where to find it... :D

LOL! Because we wouldn't want to hurt google's feelings now, would we?

Nah, more the paranoid delusion that it would blip to "how dare you use our search engine to search for another engine! Eat hot spyware!" Or something... :D

LOL! I dare you to try.

Btw, Kismet sits on that same perch in that same way. It looks miserably uncomfortable to me, but she seems to like it.

Well, I have spyware guards and all that, but the last time I clicked the shortcut to run the program, nothing happened, and I faithfully reported this problem to my systems administrator (i.e., rahirah), but she's been so busy she forgot.

Yeah, that's Cairo's little personal castle. He always gets a very surprised look on his face whenever one of the other cats is sitting there. :)
