Throwback Tuesday

I sit here watching videos on YouTube from my college years. Stray Cats, Paul Simon, Genesis, J. Geils Band, Dire Straits... ah, it's like my own private M-TV... when the "M" stood for "Music." (Money For Nothing - OMG, the STATE OF THE ART animation! We stayed up all night to watch that!)

Weather in the desert has been really freaky. We were edging up over 100 degrees in March, and it's been dipping into the 60's in May. Plus lots and lots of rain, which is almost unheardof this time of year. (Not that it's not welcome, mind you - it was a JOY to have the pouring rain all day Friday and into Saturday morning!)

I've been re-reading the Cycle of Gandalara series (Randall Garrett). I read these books in college, which was, I suppose, 30 years ago now -- and while I remember the situation, the main characters, and some of the general events, I remembered absolutely NOTHING about the plots of each book or the overriding story arc. Nothing. It's like reading new books that give me a sense of deja vu.

David Lee Roth's Just A Gigolo - Hee. Everyone was gay in the 80's, but no one was out.

I remember loving that video and now the song would be considered kinda offensive I guess. But man MTV was something back in those days (reminds me of what I was saying a few months back after visiting grandma that when I'm in a nursing home it's gonna have one rocking musical background).

The desert knows I'm coming for a visit. It's raining like mad in San Antonio too. Weirdness. Figures our March was insanely cold and snowy and our May has been in the freaking 90s.

I dont' know those books.

I had NO idea that Roth's Just a Gigolo was a cover of a song from like 1931 until I was looking for songs for a soundtrack for Soldiers of the Sun. I just had to write in Temple singing that song.

I don't get how that one would be offensive. Some others from the time, sure, but "Money for Nothing"? Maybe "and your chicks for free"?

ANYWAY... it was kind of nice revisiting some of those videos. I'll have to do it again some evening.

I remember watching for six, seven hours straight (we were waiting to see Peter Gabriel's brand-new "Sledgehammer" - now that one holds up; still a marvel of stop-motion animation).

Yep, "Just a Gigolo" is an oldie. Roth's videos are REALLY gay (and that's not used as an insult!). The man was all flash and dazzle and jazz hands. Amazing he was straight.

It's the lyrics about the faggot that get people upset I guess.

I do 80s night on you tube often really.

I loved sledgehammer!

I will have to agree with you on Roth's videos.

Looking back at Wham's videos I have no idea why the girls I went to school with were SO surprised when he came out.

Hell, we were surprised when BOY GEORGE came out. Like I said, back then everyone was gay but no one was out!

Hahaha true! Someone was arguing with me a couple years back (she's our general age) that no one back then ever thought George Michaels was straight and I'm like yeah right.

That goes along with every time I see someone "dressing 80's," and I think, "Oh, come on, we weren't that bad." Um... yeah, yeah, we were....

hahaha yes we were. God the hair I had then. I'd kill to have it back (and my little frame while we're at it)

I unashamedly loved the 80's! :)

That weather sounds WONDERFUL! Here in the subtropics it's suddenly August. Do Not Want.
