Busy Saturday

Up early again, no matter how much I might want to sleep in, cats and dog refuse to allow it. Also, the mattress is getting to the point where my back won't LET me sleep as long as I'd like -- ah, the vague aches and pains and damn, my back hurts.

But bed stripped, laundry done, dog walked, shopping accomplished (getting home stuff for various projects), made turkey pot pie for dinner, and even took the time to watch the Kentucky Derby live. (Wow, California Chrome looked like he was walking it in -- like it wasn't even an effort!)

Our neighbor who makes us little pies every so often (he uses our citrus) got a new job working for a bakery (Capriotti's Sandwich Shop) and brought us two big bags of bagels. They look good, I've never tried this place. It looks like it gets pretty good reviews on Yelp (he said the bagels "just don't move" -- other breads are probably more popular).

ANYWAY... I put up some pizza dough earlier this week and tried one of them today; this time cooked it a little too long so it was a bit crispy, but I think I'm getting the flavor down -- GOOD! Since we have so much breadstuff, though, I checked some sites and froze the rest of the dough on the authority of the site where I got the recipe from.

Getting these was easier than usual:

I'll have to take some time and get the Tivo cleared off tomorrow.

yeah I think with the OMG gluten will kill you movement bagels are falling out of favor. I still like them (I'm not supposed to have them, shakes fist at diabetes).

People are weird about the oddest things. I heard one fluff-headed actress say that gluten was "a fat additive they put in food." Well, I don't have celiac disease, so... :P

yes this is what I'm trying to get across to students. it's very much a marketing scheme. It IS necessary for Celiac's but gluten free is all rice and potato starch which is fine for some but for a diabetic like me not to much.

I read an article this morning discussing how America is falling behind not only in our economy, but also in just about everything, including education. Your students make me believe it... *sigh*

I love wheat, and about the only thing bad about it is I eat too MUCH of it. :)

twitter, texting, FB and all those short bursts of 'conversation' are actually destroying cognition. And with teaching to a test and no child left behind in k-12 we are in sad sad shape (and entitlement isn't helping)

I keep waking up around 6:30am... I thought it was because the sun was coming in through the bedroom windows, but we finally got the new blinds with blackout and I still woke up at 6:30 this morning. Ugh.

Ooo, bagels!

Yay for getting stuff done. I know what you mean about the critters not letting you sleep. Vinnie and Rogue walked the bed this morning until I got up.

Hmm, that's an interesting recipe. When I make home made dough, I generally use my cousin's recipe - he had a restaurant before I was born. I have his recipe for BBQ sauce, too. All very good stuff.

I love bagels and always will. I may not be religious, but culturally I'll always be Jewish. And ITA on California Chrome. He made it look easy.

I love bagels. And especially love finding GOOD ones, which is a real trick out here in the desert! (Many of the things they call "bagels" out here are actually round bread with a hole in the middle -- finding proper NY bagels... ah, that's a trick!)
