My Feet Hurt

Today we mostly finished with the move -- all the big stuff came out and all the books (books and books and books and books), loaded them onto the U-Haul, and got them to mom's place and packed into the shed. My foot started hurting again (I have a weird pain in the middle of the ball of my foot, which hurts largely when I walk or bend my toes back and forth), then it nearly got run over by the dolly (at least hit by a loaded one, which felt the same); but on the whole, no major injuries.

Christmas was nice. It was a relaxed, pleasant day, capped by what I think may be the best of the fluffy Doctor Who Christmas specials -- a fun, chipper romp with a few tears, several good laughs, a terrific new companion (albeit a mystery one), and just enough reference to the Ponds. Hopefully, there will be no more. Also, seeing the Doctor's face back in the opening credits? AWESOME. I was filled with glee. Am watching it again right now.

The chocolate gingerbread cookies came out amazingly delicious, and the sugar cookies aren't bad, although only a few of them got decorated, since I didn't have enough powdered sugar. Dinner was awesome, making up for the few failings of Thanksgiving.

Because we've been so busy, haven't had a chance to do much of anything, like see some movies or simple things, like laundry and housecleaning. The place is a wreck, but then, so am I.

I need friends in the UK, so they can send me letters this year. :)

I took Monday off, so I don't have to get back to work and reality until Wednesday. So far, my new place as lead worker is dandy -- I just hope the actual promotion (and money) is forthcoming here soon.

Mmmm, I'll have to look it up and see if the diagnosis fits, Doctor. :) Yes, there was quite a bit of going up and down stairs.

It all depends on the Doctor and the Companion in Old Who (or Classic Who); with Doctor Two, he traveled mostly with Jamie, the Highlander Piper, who firstly was a cute guy in a kilt (score at least ten points there), and secondly was sharp and rarely needed the Doctor to save him (when he did, there was usually very good reason). There have been other top-notch and intelligent companions, but until Donna, none have held a candle to Jamie (for me, anyway). I liked Romana II, and Jo Grant, and Nyssa, but otherwise it's all about the Doctor and the stories.

I like Clara/Oswin so far!

good luck

I never saw the Highlander Piper (mostly the only thing that played here back in the day was Tom Baker). I did like Martha because she was intelligent and Donna and Amy but yes, Clara seems like a win. If nothing else the storyline is unfolding in an interesting way.

Oh, hell, when it was on television, there was only Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy -- I watched it with friends in College, but never got into it myself until 2005 and Doctor Nine.

I watched all the other Doctors via NetFlix, and found out I LOVED Doctors Two and Three, like Five a lot, One a great deal, and still have a soft spot for poor Six (who really got shafted, story-wise). I found the novels and the stories and the pictures, all since 2005. Once I found Classic Who, I pretty much forgot it was all "the guy with the scarf." (Of course, these days it's all "the guy in the pinstriped suit.")

I could, of course, netflix it all. Pinning me down to watch what I netflix is a whole other matter. I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing the first two doctors just to see how it all began, if nothing else.

I need to find a few of those novels for a 13 yo boy for the holidays

Well, yeah, that's some of the trouble, making the time -- but there's some really good Doctor One and Two eps (even the "Lost in Time" stuff is good, even though there are missing installments). It's a crying shame so much of Doctor Two's time was lost forever and it's really unlikely any will be found. There is one adventure, The Invasion, where they did recover the soundtrack, so they animated the episode for release -- it's pretty cool.

All the Nine, Ten, and Eleven novels are available from Amazon. You can find some of the older ones used, though. The Doctor Seven and Eight novels are actually pretty adult-oriented, since the authors weren't constrained by the show anymore at that time. (Barb has most of the original run hidden in our closet; I've only read a few of those.)

Yes that is a shame so much of it was lost.

Good to know about 7 & 8. I figure I'll check halfprice book store first.

I scrounged up most of the ones I found through Amazon, but you never know what Half Price might have hiding on the shelves! I was once there looking at the Doctor Who novels and met a set of little Doctor fans who were very impressed with my t-shirt.

SF people rarely give up their darned books. It's tough to find anything there. Romance you can find a ton....

and cool about the shirt

Yes, OMG, tell me about it (after the weekend of moving a reader and her books). And I was heard to say that no matter how much we whined and moped and moaned, not a one of us ever planned on ever not OWNING books...

exactly. However, after I hit my 40s and my last move I decided that unless I KNEW I was rereading it or it was a series I'm keeping, the books get rehomed after reading

I think about that in theory, but we haven't moved since 1988. Just imagine what's squirreled away in this house...

I can but only because I'm considering moving and I've been taking inventory of all my useless shit
