Almost Ready To Go

I have 50,377 words, but I don't see the "verify" widget up on the NaNo page yet. Will still have to pay for some minutes on board.

I got interested in this old movie on TCM this morning (Mom almost always has it on), it's called "Penguin Pool Murder," based on a novel of the same name, made in 1932 -- and most of the main characters are famous COMEDIC actors in dramatic roles (in those days, actors just acted, they didn't get shoved into boxes). But what caught my eye initially was, in the opening scenes, we see a school field trip, and the kids are as diverse as any modern school! White kids, Jewish kids, black kids, even an Asian boy -- and here I thought "Christmas Story" was inaccurate on that count!

We'll probably leave before the end. Mom is fussing around as usual.

She bought a Kindle Fire, in the hopes it's easier for her. Apparently, unlike my Kindle, it requires an additional doohickey to get the wireless connection -- or so the folks at Best Buy were trying to sell us. I figured Mom was confused enough without an additional $50 (she was already confused by the carrying case and the screen protector), so showed her how to use it on her own wireless at home. If it does need extra for the 3G, we'll deal with that later -- but I don't understand why it doesn't come on board, like the Kindle Keyboard does. All I do is turn it on and it works, no matter where I am, including at work, where I KNOW there's no Internet hot spots (certainly no FREE ones).

ANYWAY, maybe I don't know as much as I think (certainly at home I'm completely at the mercy of my wife).

There are four different models of Kindle Fire. Some have built in 3G (4G now), some don't. The ones that have it built in tend to wear down their batteries faster, and are three or four times more expensive than the basic model.

Aha! It would have been nice if she had explained that to us! Geez louise, the people at Best Buy! We're having the worst time with this thing -- the books we downloaded (and paid for!) at home appear to have completely disappeared now. :P

Are you sure they were delivered to her Kindle? Either way, they should be available in her Amazon Cloud (she'll need to log in at Amazon... does she know how to do that?) and you can re-download them when you get back.

They should have been, since we could see them when we first got on the ship; but I downloaded them the moment we got back to her place and they seem to be fine NOW (knock wood). I also showed her how to purchase her own. We shall see how long this lasts...

(Home now, BTW! See ya tomorrow! <3 )
