Wednesday is the middle of the week

Today I listened to the new cast recording of Assassins, a slightly obscure Stephen Sondheim musical I like a great deal. This version has gained some popularity because Neil Patrick Harris plays the Balladeer, a character that sort of narrates the action in song. On the whole it's a pretty good recording; there are some things I like better about the old version (Victor Garber's John Wilkes Booth, notably) The weird thing is where they've added a song called "Something Just Broke" which bridges the assassination of Kennedy with the finale (somewhat sudden in the original, but I think meant to be so), and this is the first time I've ever heard Sondheim be derivative... of himself. This "new" song is almost, note-for-note (albeit much shorter), the exact same song as "Flashback" from Passions. It's very strange. Still, a pretty good recording. More of the dialogue from the show survived, and they cut down the dialogue from the scene with Booth and Oswald (which was almost completely intact, almost 11 minutes, on the original cast recording).

In the "I like my job" and "I have ethics" area, one of our insured drivers recently was in a car wreck with a fairly famous country singer (a big name, mind you, Nashville royalty, not one of my little indie fellows), and I've seen a lot of the paperwork crossing my desk, including things like HOME ADDRESS and phone, not to mention really sensitive things, as well as the nifty autograph on everything -- but I can't do anything with any of it! Not only is it wrong, it would get me fired. But I still like looking at all the stuff... and my, was the home address tempting.
