Monday, Monday

This morning I went nicely bouncing out to the truck to head to work and I unlocked the front door and reached to open all the other doors so I could put my stuff in the back seat, but the lock didn't work. I assumed it had broken (it's an old truck) and put my key in the ignition. Not even a click. Dead, dead, dead. And Barb was already gone. So I went back inside and looked around on the off chance she'd left her AAA card, but no dice. I called the office and said I'd be late, and began to study my options.

I called a "we come to you!" emergency service, but they couldn't get me a truck until after 10:30 (it was coming up on 6:30). I called a cab company and asked about the price to where my office is, and they said it would be $30. So I went to the internet and checked the bus routes. I called the Metro Phoenix transit system and was told the "most direct" route would be to take 41 East on Indian School to Scottsdale, then the 76 South down Miller to Mill Avenue in Tempe, then the 56 around to Fountainhead Parkway. With little time and fewer options, I went this route, and it took about two hours to get to work. :P (There was also another bus I COULD have taken from Scottsdale, the 66, which went the same way and was already there ready to go -- but I waited for the 76 'cause that's what I'd been told.)

Coming home I took the 56 to the 44 to the 17 to the 10, which took me basically from the door of my office to my home in just about an hour, and without circling around the entire Valley. Most direct, my butt.

Now I have a brand-new battery and the truck door locks work. I got almost 30 months out of a 60-month battery, which is not bad for an old truck in Phoenix. (Hot weather kills batteries.)

Now I'm tired and Barb is sick. I have to go in early tomorrow and Wednesday to make up the two hours it took me to get to work this morning rather than taking personal time.

It sounds like your transit system is as bad as ours. When we moved into our house, rackham looked into taking the bus, since the Park & Ride is just a few blocks away. It would have taken him two hours each way by bus... instead of the 20 minute drive he's got when he goes by car. Two Freakin' Hours... to get from a major Park & Ride in a techie-rich suburb to Microsoft.

Apparently the bus schedule was developed by the same brain-fried idiots who designed the I-90/I-405 interchange (where entering and exiting traffic has to *cross* in order to change freeways).

I'm sorry your Monday was bad.

And I'm sorry Barb isn't feeling well!

Deep sympathy. I had to ride the Phoenix bus system to work once when my car was in the shop. I could literally have walked to work faster. They claim the bus system is better now, but somehow I don't believe it.

Blech. Hope you and Barb are doing better!
