It's Been A Week

In that it was seven days - seven days which contained Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, and the Lunar New Year.

These are some favorite days for me. I do love Valentine's Day. I have a wonderful wife and we always enjoy our "date evenings." We went out for sushi at our favorite place and while things were tense, they were good -- until we got a call from Barb's brother, that her sister had taken a turn for the worse. Worry and tension changed our outlook of the evening.

I completely forgot Tuesday was Mardi Gras. Laissez les bons temps rouler. No beads, no purple-and-green shirt, no cake. Just... worry.

And I'm sure pretty much everyone who reads this also reads Barb's journal, and know that her sister, a courageous and wonderful person, managed to hold on until Wednesday, when she finally lost her battle with colon cancer. Tension broke, to be replaced with mourning.

Thursday the Year of the Goat began. Gong xi fa cai. I have at least been wearing red, in the hopes that this year will bring us some prosperity, because the Western year 2015 has, so far, not been too great.

Friday we got the unexpected news at work that one of our co-workers (who's been in my unit since around 2003 - I trained him) passed away suddenly, which was a shock. I can't claim that I always got along with him (I think his extreme Mormonism sometimes put a wall there), but he was a member of my team, and he was a kind person. I have a couple of little cat figures he gave me over the years.

This morning we realized that the boy cats are bullying the Little Bit (one of Barb's mom's cats, who has come to live with us) and keeping her from the litter box, so she's been peeing in the closet. Damn it. Well, that lead to about four hours of concentrated closet cleaning this morning, which has resulted in a coffee table covered with books we're donating to VNSA, two bags of clothes and shoes headed for Goodwill, and a much cleaner closet. It did annoy the cat, though, and she disappeared completely for the rest of the day, not to be found anywhere, until about a half-hour ago when she magically reappeared. No clue where she could have been hiding.

Now I sit with my head completely clogged (not sure what's in bloom right now, but it's killing me), exhausted, watching the Oscars on tape delay, since I had to go drive a U-Haul across town for some friends. I took some decongestant and antihistamine, and hopefully that will help.

I tried to write a short story today, inspired by reading Neil Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors short story collection. I never have had the knack of short story writing, but I keep trying.
