Drink Your Whiskey Down

It's fun to ask your characters questions! I snatched this from rahirah:

Questionnaire - Sean Patrick

What's the worst thing someone could do?

Hurt someone they care for, I think - however they do it. Lie or cheat or inflict physical harm - you shouldn’t hurt someone you love.

What's the worst thing someone could do to you?

Well, I’ve been hurt, so I sure speak from experience there. And I’ve been lied to. Not really sure which was worse. Of course, I’m easily hurt and I know that, so it’s hard to say what the worst thing COULD be. The worst thing that HAS been was learning the way my little brother raised his kids to hate me. That hurt like nothing in the world has ever hurt.

What's the worst thing that could happen to you?

If I lost my family.

What's the worst thing someone could say about a person?

I suppose it depends on what that person takes to heart. I try real hard not to let words get under my skin because that’s all they are, words. What’s more important is the actions that might follow. But telling lies out of school about folks, that’s low.

What's the best thing someone could say about a person?

I love him/her/them/you.

Are men and women basically different?

Hell, yes. Pardon.

Which is better, to be a woman or to be a man?

You know, I never gave that much thought. I don’t know if being a man is “better” than being a woman - gals seem to have their own joys and sorrows, same as men do. I never yearned to be a woman, but never thought all that much about being a man. It’s just how I came out.

What can men do that women can't do?

Of course the first thing that comes to mind is ‘pee standing up,’ pardon. But seriously, I don’t know if there is anything that strictly men can do that women can’t. Just depends on the woman. Any determined woman can do just about anything a man can do - but I’ll tell ya, no man can have a baby. I honestly can’t think of anything a man can do that a woman can’t. Shit. Pardon.

What can women do that men can't do?

Give birth, for one. Cry in public without being ridiculed. Hug, be demonstrative, or wear the other gender’s clothing, ditto. You never see anyone staring at a woman in a pant suit, but if a guy turns up in a dress, wheee-oo. Oh, wait. I know one for the previous question. A man can take his shirt off in public. It’s all a society thing.

Is it possible to change genders?

Sure. You just need money, hormones, and a good surgeon.

How old is old enough to have sex?

Now this is gonna get me in trouble, I know it. I was fifteen, and that probably wasn’t old enough, but then again, it was 1878. I wasn’t all that happy to find out Matt was only sixteen, because from an adult perspective, that’s way too young. I know lots of kids think they’re ready, and maybe some of them are, but really, I don’t think any of us are “old enough” until we can really comprehend everything it means, and that includes the possibility of children... at least, for humans. If I ever get into a position where I have to raise kids again, I’m going to try to encourage them to wait, more for maturity than physical age, I think.

Is it wrong to have sex if you're unmarried?

Uh oh. Well... Yes and no. Yes in that I’m a devout Catholic dogma sort of way, but no in that I’ve never been above hiring a girl to, um, relieve tension with. And I certainly carried on outside of marriage more than once with girls I cared for. I did try to behave myself once I got engaged, trying to wait for the wedding, but my fiancée wasn’t quite as devout as me.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone other than your spouse if you're married?

Yes. At least, for me. Once that ring landed on my finger, that’s all she wrote.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of the same gender?

No.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of a different race (or a different intelligent non-human species)?

Lord, I hope not. Technically I’m not human anymore, so that would do me poorly to think that.

Is it wrong to have more than one sexual partner at the same time?

Well, it is for me. But I’m not going to say the same for others. That’s up to all the parties participating.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone you don't love?

Well, no. I always get all tongue-tied admitting it, ‘cause I don’t like to talk about it, but I like sex. I like girls. Women. I love the touching, the fondling, the tasting. Love came into it a couple times, but mostly, it’s been for fun and passion and all those things I have to go and confess.

What are the responsibilities of a mother toward a child?

Love, mostly. Then to teach them, lead them, guide them, discipline them when needed, show them the way to live, within society and within themselves. Help them build a foundation for their own existence.

What are the responsibilities of a father toward a child?

Same as above, with a little more work when it comes to the boys. Raising a boy was hard, hard work. Raising girls was easy. Two girls, all they needed was gentle direction, a soft word, a Santa Claus at Christmas and a good book in the evening, a shoulder to cry on when the teen years hit and as much advice as I was capable of giving. One boy... Lord, Lord, I never thought I’d have enough strength.

What are the responsibilities of a child toward a parent?

To love, to listen, to learn, to obey. More or less in that order.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your child?

Neither takes precedence, I don’t think.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your spouse?

Spouse. That’s why traditionally you leave your parents for your spouse - the next step in life.

Which should be more important to you, your child or your spouse?

I’ve seen this depend on the person. For me I’d have a real hard time saying, but then, my “children” are all grown by the time I get married. In general, especially for mothers, I’d say the child.

Is it wrong to have a child if you're unmarried?

No, not at all. As long as the child is loved, it shouldn’t matter.

Is abortion wrong?

Not in my mind. (I hope I don’t have to confess that. Father O’Brien already knows my stand on abortion.)

Is contraception wrong?

No, again.

Is there one true religion?

Probably not. One true God, I believe in. Religion is a whole ‘nother thing.

Does a deity or deities exist?

I believe so, yes.

How important is it to believe in a deity or deities?

It’s one of the main foundations of my life. I may have strayed a ways from the dogma and stricter teachings of my faith, but the faith itself - the belief in God - is a fundamental part of my overall makeup. I am who I am, and I believe that God brought that about. He gave me my heart and my soul and my mind and without Him I wouldn’t have figured out how to use any of it.

How important is it to actively practice your religion?

For me it’s very important. I derive a great deal of comfort from the rituals I practiced as a boy; I was always very devout and while I’ve grown beyond a lot of those more restrictive teachings of the Mother Church, I still go to mass, I wear my St. Christopher medallion, and I attend confession - or whatever they call it these days, I know that’s not right but Father O’Brien knows I’m a little old-fashioned. I know all the troubles with the Catholic church, and I know that it obviously ain’t something brand-new, but I never had any problems like that myself. I was an unmolested altar boy and have always admired and trusted my priests.

Does magic exist?

Yes.

Is practicing magic wrong?

No more than any other science, it’s just always been the persecuted one.

Is killing always wrong?

Yes. But sometimes necessary, sadly.

Is war always wrong?

Yes. Always wrong; sometimes necessary, as above. I don’t support the current war. I was on the bandwagon back during both World Wars, especially W-W-Two. Sometimes you just have to take a stand for your beliefs, especially when someone is trying to force you to their yoke.

How old is old enough to fight in a war?

Never. No man or woman should have to fight for anything. I’m not even old enough to fight in a war. But if necessary... at least old enough to know one’s mind. I say twenty-one, at the earliest. A boy should be able to drink before he can carry a gun and shoot an enemy.

Is rape always wrong?

Yes. No other answers there.

Is torture always wrong?

Yes. Ditto.

Is theft always wrong?

Not always. I wouldn’t hold it against a hungry man stealing food to feed his family. Do I wish it wasn’t sometimes necessary that these things exist? Yeah. But wishing doesn’t change the facts. The poor will be with us always, and desperation will drive a man to do things he believes are wrong.

Is slavery wrong?

Yes.

Is lying wrong?

Yes, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all try it sometimes. Even me. You have to ask yourself, is the lie going to save someone from getting hurt, and then ask further, will it save them from getting hurt now, and hurt them a lot more later when they find out the truth? It’s inevitable that the truth is gonna come out, so you might as well stick with it right from the start. Except for those awkward situations when you hear, “What do you think?” regarding a new outfit...

Is swearing wrong?

See above. I’ve got a terrible mouth on me, but I try to watch it.

The Questionnaire - Della Kelley

What's the worst thing someone could do?

Murder, I think. Or rape. Violating someone else’s life in some way - taking it or destroying it somehow, physically or mentally.

What's the worst thing someone could do to you?

Make me feel less about myself.

What's the worst thing that could happen to you?

If I lost my ability to reason, to think.

What's the worst thing someone could say about a person?

You’re worthless.

What's the best thing someone could say about a person?

I love you.

Are men and women basically different?

My goodness, yes.

Which is better, to be a woman or to be a man?

Being a woman.

What can men do that women can't do?

Reach the top of doors. Open bottles of beer with their hands. Change tires. Sing bass. Carry a trunk.

What can women do that men can't do?

Just about everything else.

Is it possible to change genders?

Certainly, but why would one want to?

How old is old enough to have sex?

Probably eighteen to twenty, depending on how mature you are.

Is it wrong to have sex if you're unmarried?

Well, that’s what they say, but if it’s true, then I suppose I’m bound for hell.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone other than your spouse if you're married?

Yes, certainly.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of the same gender?

For me it’s not that appealing, but I can’t see it’s wrong for someone who’s inclined that way.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of a different race (or a different intelligent non-human species)?

I used to think so, but not so much anymore.

Is it wrong to have more than one sexual partner at the same time?

Yes, but it’s deliciously wicked to think about it... and by that I mean at the SAME time...

Is it wrong to have sex with someone you don't love?

No, not at all. Sex is just a romp, it doesn’t have anything to do with love.

What are the responsibilities of a mother toward a child?

Love and nurturing, mostly. Guidance and understanding, teaching and discipline.

What are the responsibilities of a father toward a child?

The same, in most cases; although I don’t think my father did very well. He just wanted me to do exactly as he had, with no understanding of the differences between us.

What are the responsibilities of a child toward a parent?

To obey, I suppose, at least until a fully formed adult. Then I don’t know there’s any responsibilities left, unless the parent truly still has need of the child. I’ve come to be friends with my mother, but I’ll probably never see my father again.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your child?

My children, if I’d ever had any.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your spouse?

My spouse.

Which should be more important to you, your child or your spouse?

Since I’ll never have children, I will have to say my spouse.

Is it wrong to have a child if you're unmarried?

I don’t think so, as long as you’re prepared to love and care for the child.

Is abortion wrong?

No.

Is contraception wrong?

Not in the slightest.

Is there one true religion?

I never thought so, even when I was going to mass regularly.

Does a deity or deities exist?

I don’t know anymore. Sometimes I think yes, other times not so much. If there is a deity, it doesn’t really care much about what we do or don’t do. Just don’t tell Sean Patrick that.

How important is it to believe in a deity or deities?

Not at all, really.

How important is it to actively practice your religion?

I don’t, anymore, except to accompany Sean Patrick to church. It’s important to him, so I care.

Does magic exist?

Well, yes. Of course it does.

Is practicing magic wrong?

No.

Is killing always wrong?

Yes, always. I know it’s been done and I know why, but it still bothers me. I’m not even sure why, especially knowing what I do.

Is war always wrong?

Yes. I doubt man will ever stop, though.

How old is old enough to fight in a war?

Eighteen, twenty, forty, a hundred - it’s never old enough to die for someone else’s cause.

Is rape always wrong?

Yes.

Is torture always wrong?

Yes.

Is theft always wrong?

Yes.

Is slavery wrong?

Yes.

Is lying wrong?

Mostly, but sometimes it’s occasionally necessary.

Is swearing wrong?

Nonsense, of course not.

The Questionnaire - Matthias O’Connor

What's the worst thing someone could do?

Give up on someone, I suppose. I always stand by the people I love, I can’t imagine forsaking them.

What's the worst thing someone could do to you?

Lose faith in me.

What's the worst thing that could happen to you?

You know, I’ve thought about this... it depends on where I am in my life. When I was young, it was losing my parents. I never thought anything worse could ever happen. Then Sean Patrick was in that accident and I wondered what it’d be like if something ever really happened to him. And now... Losing Cody. In so many ways I guess my life is wrapped up with the people I care about. For me personally, I don’t think there’s anything you could do to me that I couldn’t get over eventually, but hurt someone I care about and I’ll never forgive.

What's the worst thing someone could say about a person?

Almost anything untrue can be made into something bad; on the whole I think I’d have to say anything that impugns someone’s character, false or not. If you can’t say something nice, don’t say it at all, I guess.

What's the best thing someone could say about a person?

That they’re a decent, honest person.

Are men and women basically different?

Oh, hell yes.

Which is better, to be a woman or to be a man?

Personally I’d rather be a guy, because honestly, I’m one of those guys who’d be endlessly preoccupied with my own breasts if I had ‘em.

What can men do that women can't do?

No offense to the lady athletes, but men are better boxers. Although women can kick-box the hell out of some guys. I think men are nervier in some situations. Not that that’s always a good thing... I know there’s women extremists, but generally speaking, a guy is going to always going to be faster at jumping off a bridge with a rubber band tied to his ankles than a woman.

What can women do that men can't do?

Women will think first before jumping. I think women are a lot more flexible, too, and not just physically - although Cody can stand on one leg for something like twenty minutes. But women can analyze better, I think. Not as likely to plow into something without looking at it from all angles. Women have the uncanny ability to be sexy and alluring even when they’re all sweaty and dirty, like after a workout. Women can have a closet absolutely overflowing with clothes and still need something new to wear to a party or a dinner. Women can look at a shirt and know what it’ll match and what it won’t.

Is it possible to change genders?

Well, yeah. I know a gal who used to be a guy.

How old is old enough to have sex?

I think that depends on the individual. Some kids may never be ready, some are ready surprisingly young. Some who are having sex already shouldn’t be. In general, though, probably around eighteen or nineteen, maybe even twenty. I know I was way too young, that’s for damned sure. I couldn’t handle it and the way I reacted made that painfully obvious.

Is it wrong to have sex if you're unmarried?

Wrong? No, not if all parties are consenting. Marriage is a wonderful institution but I don’t see the license as a license for sex.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone other than your spouse if you're married?

Now that I see as wrong. Once you make that promise you keep it. Hell, even if you’re exclusive without the marriage vows.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of the same gender?

Not if you’re gay. Or if you’re just into that sort of thing. Sex is private between adults; whatever they want to do with each other is their business, long as they’re all aware of what they’re doing and went into it willingly.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of a different race (or a different intelligent non-human species)?

No.

Is it wrong to have more than one sexual partner at the same time?

No.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone you don't love?

Again, not if all parties are consenting. For me, I’ve never really gotten into sex with someone I don’t love. I don’t know if I just talked myself into that place or what, but I’ve always loved every woman I’ve slept with.

What are the responsibilities of a mother toward a child?

To love and care for them, to help and nurture and protect them, teach them about the world. Things I remember about Mama, her holding me when I was sad or cleaning out scrapes and petting bruises, laughing with me or helping me do something hard. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if she hadn’t died, what my teen years would have been like if she’d been there to show me how to behave. Not that Sean Patrick didn’t do a bang-up job, mind, but he never was a mother, you know?

What are the responsibilities of a father toward a child?

To guide, to teach, to set an example, to protect and guide, like the mother but maybe with a sterner hand, especially for me, I guess. This is where Sean Patrick did shine. He was a great father, and he sure didn’t have it easy with me. He tried real hard to pick up where Daddy left off and do all the things I know Daddy would have done if he’d lived.

What are the responsibilities of a child toward a parent?

I don’t know that children have “responsibilities” toward their parents, at least, not while they’re children. Sure, they’re expected to love and obey, but really, they aren’t going to do that unless the parent does the work to get ‘em there. If a parent doesn’t do what they’re supposed to do, then a child really can’t be expected to be “responsible” for anything. Children aren’t born knowing what to do, no matter what some people think. They’re animals that need to be trained. Then they can fulfill any responsibilities.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your child?

Parents when you’re young, children when you’re older. That’s how the cycle goes.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your spouse?

Once you get married, your spouse, of course. Your parents should always be important, but there’s a reason the symbolic nature of marriage is your parents “giving” you away.

Which should be more important to you, your child or your spouse?

Neither, in this case, I think. You choose your spouse to spend your life with and if done right, then you’re two parts of one person - but your children are a part of you, too. All interconnected lives.

Is it wrong to have a child if you're unmarried?

No, not if you love the kids.

Is abortion wrong?

No, not if that’s what the woman wants. It’s her body.

Is contraception wrong?

No, that’s ridiculous. I don’t care what the mother church says, sex is not strictly for procreation.

Is there one true religion?

Nah. I’ve seen too many different ideas in my time. I have family on both sides who are Catholic, but then there’s my Hindu family back in India and the Native American spiritualists and then I meet Cody and her yoga mystic stuff, and her family’s notions. No religion is “true.”

Does a deity or deities exist?

Probably. I think in my heart of hearts I believe most in the “great spirit,” the gods of earth and sky and what-have-you that came from my Apache ancestry.

How important is it to believe in a deity or deities?

Sometimes I derive comfort from it. Other times... It’s more of a comfort to believe in humans, myself, and the people I love. We make our own destinies.

How important is it to actively practice your religion?

I haven’t been to mass voluntarily in ages. I automatically follow the steps when I go, but I haven’t believed in it in years. I suppose we’ll be married in a High Ceremony to make Sean Patrick happy, but it’s not that important to me.

Does magic exist?

God, yes. I’ve seen it. Cody’s family alone crackles with it.

Is practicing magic wrong?

No. That’s like saying practicing medicine is wrong.

Is killing always wrong?

Yeah, but it’s sometimes necessary. I killed to protect my family, and I’d sure as hell do it again. Sometimes I think nothing felt better than watching that bastard’s head explode.

Is war always wrong?

The current one sure is. I can’t say all of them are.

How old is old enough to fight in a war?

They’re sure sending them too young. I think eighteen is WAY too young.

Is rape always wrong?

Yes.

Is torture always wrong?

Yes.

Is theft always wrong?

Not always, but usually.

Is slavery wrong?

Yes.

Is lying wrong?

Nah. There’s good lies, although I suck at telling even the best ones.

Is swearing wrong?

No. It’s way too prevalent these days, but it’s not wrong. It’s just annoying sometimes. Cursing just lets off steam, and I should really curse more than lash out.

The Questionnaire - Cody Cameron

What's the worst thing someone could do?

Oh, golly, I don’t know. Rape, I guess.

What's the worst thing someone could do to you?

Well, I guess, given my first answer, rape me.

What's the worst thing that could happen to you?

Now come on! You’ve pulled this answer out of me already! The worst thing nearly happened, and that’s as far as I want to go with that.

What's the worst thing someone could say about a person?

That they’re a bad person, or a liar, or something like that. Run them down.

What's the best thing someone could say about a person?

That they’re a good person. I’m kinda black-and-white, aren’t I?

Are men and women basically different?

Heck, yeah. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Which is better, to be a woman or to be a man?

There have been times I wished I was a guy, but mostly it was times when I needed some additional upper body strength. Mostly I’m pretty happy being all girly.

What can men do that women can't do?

Open jars reliably, reach high shelves, comprehend how boxing is scored. Or Nascar, for that matter. That sort of thing.

What can women do that men can't do?

Hit the hamper, fold towels, put groceries away. Okay, guys CAN do that, but it seems a lot of them won’t do ‘em once they have a woman around the house.

Is it possible to change genders?

Sure. We know a girl who used to be a guy.

How old is old enough to have sex?

Depends on how they handle it. I sometimes think some people probably never got old enough. I think I did pretty well. I was eighteen and I don’t think it adversely affected me.

Is it wrong to have sex if you're unmarried?

Boy, I hope not. I’ve had lots of sex and haven’t gotten married yet.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone other than your spouse if you're married?

Yes. I’m always exclusive. One guy at a time, and now one guy forever.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of the same gender?

No, if that’s what they want.

Is it wrong to have sex with a person of a different race (or a different intelligent non-human species)?

No.

Is it wrong to have more than one sexual partner at the same time?

For me, yes. For others? Who knows? If it’s okay for them.

Is it wrong to have sex with someone you don't love?

I don’t know if it’s wrong, but it’s not exactly my cup of java.

What are the responsibilities of a mother toward a child?

To guide, protect, care for, teach, love. Mom’s always been great. She’s a mother first and then a terrific friend. I’ve gotten way close to her since I grew up. I hope I’m even half as good when I finally have kids.

What are the responsibilities of a father toward a child?

Pretty much the same things. My parents rock, frankly.

What are the responsibilities of a child toward a parent?

I don’t know. I suppose to love them and obey them, at least until adulthood - maybe when they get older I’ll have to care for them, although I have five older siblings to help out with that. Maybe we all have that responsibility when it comes to our parents.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your child?

My children, I guess, as I get older, especially.

Which should be more important to you, your parent or your spouse?

Spouse, I think. The point is you get old enough to get on without your parents, and that means they did their job.

Which should be more important to you, your child or your spouse?

I couldn’t choose one over the other. Right now the most important person in the world is Matt; our kids would certainly be equal to him in my mind, but I don’t know how I’ll feel once there are actually kids.

Is it wrong to have a child if you're unmarried?

Nah. Marriage is a state of mind.

Is abortion wrong?

No. I know it’s not a popular concept, but until that fetus is viable and able to live on its own outside of the woman’s body, it’s just a parasite.

Is contraception wrong?

Boy, that’s a stupid outlook. And I don’t mean to put down those people who believe it is... wait, yes, I do. It’s a stupid outlook.

Is there one true religion?

No. All religions are true to those who believe them.

Does a deity or deities exist?

Yes. Probably all of them, in some form or another.

How important is it to believe in a deity or deities?

For a lot of people it’s way important. I believe in the temple of the soul, the body, the self; my god is within me and I believe there is a god inside all of us as much as there is around us, surrounding us, within and without. We have the power, all we have to do is tap it.

How important is it to actively practice your religion?

I try to settle into at least an hour of yoga a day. I don’t always manage it, but I can reach inside myself at any time and draw out that strength, so yeah, it’s important to me.

Does magic exist?

Well, duh. Of course.

Is practicing magic wrong?

If you’re bad at it. Rimshot. No, seriously, of course not. Just because history made it wrong doesn’t make it wrong, any more than anything else the so-called self-righteous frown on are wrong.

Is killing always wrong?

Yes. Still, I’m sleeping with a murderer, so I guess sometimes... there’s always an exception to every rule.

Is war always wrong?

Yeah, but it doesn’t stop men from doing it.

How old is old enough to fight in a war?

Never. If everyone just said “no” what would the leaders do?

Is rape always wrong?

YES.

Is torture always wrong?

Yes, and oh, yes, again.

Is theft always wrong?

Mostly, but I can’t help but think there are people who steal only because they have no other choice. I do admire those who would rather starve than steal, but you gotta admire the survival instinct.

Is slavery wrong?

Yes.

Is lying wrong?

Most of the time, yes. Although I have to say that even good lies look bad when you get caught in them.

Is swearing wrong?

No, unless you’re talking about “swearing” to do something and then backing out of it.

I had some other stuff to post, but I can't remember what it was I was thinking about the other morning while I was at the gym.

I cross-posted these character questionnaires to nanomowhinging.
