Profitable day

I took today (and tomorrow) off. I woke up at an ungodly early hour despite having stayed up 'til midnight (I fortunately adjust relatively quickly to having to get up early during the work week, although "tired" and "grumpy" often follows me). I meant to sleep later, but a very noisy truck parked a very noisy hitch right out front of our house at about 7 or so, with the dropping of metal ramps and rattling of hitch chains, so I decided to get up anyway. I cleaned the living room (more or less) and got some headway on cleaning my office, yikes. I formatted what I have of my Buffy story but didn't get anything more of it written. Did the week's shopping, went out to lunch, put together Barb's mom's Kinder Eggs (nifty little toys from Germany), tried at times to clean the back yard, but the 98 degrees with 69% humidity was too much for me, so came back inside every time I tried; played a little guitar after tuning up my dreadnought (which I haven't played much since I got the Fender GC), and still feel like I didn't really get anything much done.

I suppose the next step is to actually work on the edits which I've received for some of my stories, including the first part of said Buffy story, which Barb kindly gave me comments on. I don't know that the writing is much good, but I like the story I came up with... I don't know if it's really any GOOD as a Buffy story, though, because there's no villain, just misunderstandings.

I made a lot of labels for my CDs. That's fun, doing that artwork (although technically I don't know how to use Photoshop... Hi, Gene... ;D ) and putting the things together. I just got Merle Haggard's new album to review. Nifty.

Johnny Cash has been nominated for six MTV Video Awards. Down on Music Row, they're all surprised that this "old guy" is appealing to a teen audience. Gee, maybe some young people like good music better than a pretty face and belly button? :P If you haven't heard Cash's new song/seen the video, the new release of the album includes the video on a bonus DVD. It's worth every cent. (My review is here -- I wrote it before the video was released.) Johnny's also up for several CMA Awards. Apparently the COUNTRY Music Association suddenly remembered he's a country music legend (or else they were embarrassed by the fact the rock community remembered him first); in any case, they gave him a little nod with nominations for Video and Album of the Year (at least), and Vocal Event for his contribution to the beautiful "Tears in the Holston River" with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their "Will The Circle Be Unbroken III" (which also deserved an "Album of the Year" nod, but did not receive one -- perhaps it's considered too early a release, but then, the Vocal Event nomination? Hmmm...).

I just realized that I haven't got a clue how to put down people's names with their LJ link, as when I refer to Barb (rahirah) and Gene (genebreshears) above. I must learn this... But heck, I just figured out how easy it is to do html in LJ, so I learn slow, at least I learn. :)

I remember Kinder Surprises! We had quite the collection going for the while. We felt quite stiffed when we got the little dwarf figurines that didn't need to be built, or - worse - the miniature jigsaw puzzles. (although they were great to stick onto plain-wrapped presents)

You know there are Kinder Surprise collectors, don't you? :-)

And fwiw, the LJ link thingy is (but using >) [lj user="rahirah"] to produce rahirah links. I had trouble finding it in the LJ FAQ section and had to ask too :-)

Barb's rahirah brother is stationed in Germany and sends them by the bushel to their mother -- she has racks and racks of the toys, but can't see too well to put them together anymore, so she has us do them. Some of 'em are really cool. The sad part is when you find 'em with missing parts! Eek! I wouldn't be surprised if there were collector clubs -- I just found the website URL inside one of the eggs. :D (Did you know they're banned in the US? There's a German bakery near us that said they can't import 'em anymore because of the "choking hazard." Same reason Nestle stopped putting the cool toys inside of their "Wonder Balls" from a few years back. I think we're dealing with contraband! :D )

When I get my head together after Crazy August, I will send you guys a parcel of "Yowies" - they have Australian bush animal figurines inside to make.

I wonder whether that's why we can't get Kinder Surprises in Australia any more. I remember buying a display box of 72 once for a party - pity the chocolate isn't the kind I like!

Oh, nifty! :D There's a bunch of cool stuff y'all got "down under." A couple of Aussie guys on my country music board are always sharing cool stuff with us poor folks "up top."

No, the chocolate ain't much good, the fun part is what's inside.
